Railway Retreats in Snowdonia, Wales

Railways in Snowdonia, Wales

If you love steam trains then Snowdonia really is the perfect spot for you, and Dolffanog makes the perfect base.

The Talyllyn Railway is the world's first preserved railway and is only a short drive from Dolffanog Fach. It's a lovely day out for people of all ages and is a must for young Thomas the Tank Engine fans. Rev. Awdry was one of the earliest members of the Talyllyn Preservation Society when it was formed in 1951. He became a volunteer on the railway and for his 10th book in "The Railway Series" he based the Skarloey Narrow Guage Railway on Talyllyn and his trains Skarloey, Rheneas, Peter Sam and Sir Handel was based on Talyllyn's engines - Talyllyn, Dolgoch, Edward Thomas and Sir Haydn.

There are many more Railways in the area. Click on any of the links below for details. As our sons our obsessed with trains we are working our way through all of them and will be happy to recommend our favourites.
